A modified method for producing a volumetric discharge in CO2 laser mixtures at atmospheric pressure using electrode-free discharge in cathode region with subsequent injection of free electrons into the main discharge gap is proposed and tested. A homogeneous discharge with the volume of 10×10×30 cm3 was obtained. Maximum pumping energy density of 110 mJ·cm–3 in CO2:N2:He = 1:1:8 working mixture was achieved.
Key words: : TEA-CO2 laser, volume discharge, electric discharge module, pumping energy density, preionization, pulse generator.
